The Misogynoir to Mishpat (M2M) Research Network is sharing select podcasts such as Beyond the Womanist Classroom, to expose our readers to various issues within theological education. It’s easy to tell ourselves that education or knowledge is race-neutral, but experience has taught us that this is not the case.
As you listen to this podcast, we thought it helpful to further introduce you to the work of the podcast host, Prof. Mitzi Smith of Columbia Theological Seminary where she is a New Testament Professor. Her books include: I Found God in Me (2015), Toward Decentering the New Testament (2018), Womanist Sass and Talk Back (2018), Chloe and Her People (2023), We Are All Witnesses (2023).
Please join us in listening to Episode 14 of Beyond the Womanist Classroom with the insightful womanist scholar and author, Prof. Mitzi Smith. She interviews Rev. Dr. Sharon Ellis Davis about her new book The Trauma of Sexual and Domestic Violence: Navigating My Way through Individuals, Religion, Policing and the Courts.
Sexual violence is often overlooked in reading the Bible which makes it easier for the Christian Church to overlook its pervasiveness. How do we understand sexual violence? How should the Church community respond when sexual violence has occurred and what steps can we take to prevent further acts of violence? How can the Church pursue healing for both the perpetrators and victims of violence? If the Church begins to take this type of violation seriously, will it be able to influence the courts to strengthen laws which protect the most vulnerable among us?
How does forgiveness factor into violations? Is it easier to impress upon victims their "responsibility" to forgive, rather than hold accountable those who perpetrate acts of violence? Can we achieve full forgiveness without accountability - are they intertwined?
