Within the Halls of Academia, we are always learning more about the canon. Whether in literature, history or religion, the canon was created by and for an elite group of White men. Expanding that canon has been the work of many scholars over the years.
People like Toni Morrison have successfully expanded the concept of a literary canon with her amazing capacity to both interrogate the existing literary canon and simultaneously make space for her own voice. She refuses to center Black definition in Whiteness - recognizing that to write for that social power construct is to pay homage to what she calls "The White gaze."
Another example is Christian Sharpe. In this link, Sharpe is reading an analysis of Alison Saar's work. Her act of reading and considering is part of the way we expand the inherited canons of our disciplines.
Within the study of religion, Black women often use the frameworks and ideas of other Black women scholars. As you think about the prose offered by Sharpe, we hope you will be inspired in your writing today, to write think of the spaces that you will fill with descriptive and thoughtful analysis. We hope you will enjoy hearing this reading by Sharpe!
