Call for Papers
Black Women, Religions, and Political Truths
Acknowledging the deep entanglements of Black politics and religious traditions with global capitalism, Black Women and Religious Cultures invites submissions for a special issue titled "Black Women, Religion, and Political Truths: Intersections Across Borders." This issue seeks to amplify critical conversations on national and transnational politics, exploring themes such as political betrayal, prison and police abolition, alliances with adversaries, the evolving landscape of electoral politics, activism and social transformation, Black women’s political leadership, and the ongoing struggles against systemic violence, including genocide.
Black women have consistently been vanguards of political and religious movements, shaping narratives of power, liberation, and justice across the world. This special issue seeks to illuminate the profound intersections of Black women’s lived experiences, spiritual traditions, and political engagements. We invite scholarly contributions that delve into these intricate relationships, offering fresh insights into how Black women’s actions and beliefs transcend borders, challenge injustices, and reimagine pathways to collective freedom.
Potential Approaches and Research Questions:
Historical Overlaps: Investigating the historical connections between Black women's activism in civil rights movements and their roles within religious institutions, such as Black Theology or Womanism.
Transnational Perspectives: Exploring how Black women navigate religious and political landscapes across different contexts within the African Diaspora, including the Caribbean, Africa, Europe, and the Americas.
Agency and Resistance: Analyzing instances of Black women's agency and resistance within religious and political frameworks, including their roles in liberation theology, grassroots movements, and political leadership.
Intersectionality: Examining how intersecting identities, such as gender, race, class, and sexuality, shape Black women's religious and political experiences on a transnational scale.
Diasporic Connections: Investigating the ways in which Black women's religious practices and political ideologies are influenced by diasporic connections and cultural exchanges.
Global Capitalism and Liberation: Critically engaging with the intersections of global capitalism, imperialism, and Black women's religious and political struggles for liberation and sovereignty.
