Emory University’s Candler School of Theology invites applications and nominations for a cluster hire of two scholars in Christian theology and/or ethics. Appointments can be made at any rank including Assistant Professor (tenure-track), Associate Professor (tenured), or Professor (tenured). Appointments will commence in August 2025.
The two appointments should complement each other and Candler’s current strengths in the fields of theology and ethics. At least one of the appointments must have demonstrated research expertise in Black, womanist, African, and/or Africana traditions in theology and/or ethics. A second appointment may share this research focus, or alternatively, have demonstrated research expertise in Asian American and Pacific Islander, Latine, Native American, decolonial, and/or queer discourses in theology and/or ethics. All appointments must display the capacity to contribute to a broad theological curriculum and situate theology and/or ethics within larger ecumenical, multi-faith and global contexts. They must also have a demonstrated commitment to teaching and mentoring a diverse student body with respect to race, gender, sexuality, nationality, and theological perspective.
The people appointed to these positions will develop and teach courses in several of the degree programs of Candler School of Theology, including the MDiv, MTS, MARL, and DMin. They will have shared responsibility for introductory sequences and regular faculty rotation in the Contextual Education program. Appointees will have a research and publication agenda to equip them to participate in the Graduate Division of Religion in the Laney Graduate School of Emory University. In addition to teaching and research, faculty members of Candler School of Theology are committed to service, both within the school and in the larger church and community.
People from underrepresented groups—including women, racial/ethnic minorities, LGBTQIA+ persons, people with disabilities, and veterans—are strongly encouraged to apply, as are people from Wesleyan traditions (e.g., UMC, AME, AMEZ, CME, Wesleyan, Nazarene, and Holiness).
At this stage, we ask applicants to submit a cover letter and CV only. Candidates’ cover letters should include a brief statement about their experience and approach to teaching and mentoring students of diverse backgrounds. Candidates should apply online at http://apply.interfolio.com/152445 by uploading the letter of interest and curriculum vitae. Inquiries should be directed to Dr. Ian McFarland, Search Chair, at ian.mcfarland@emory.edu. Complete applications must be submitted by October 1, 2024 to ensure review.
