Race, Gender and Sexuality
How are these social constructs functioning and how do they impact study of religion?
Race is a social construct. Does this mean that racism isn’t real? Are there biological differences between women and men? If so, why do some academics indicate this is a social construct? What is the difference between gender performance and gender as that into which we are born? As religious scholars and religious leaders, these questions are important for our work within parish ministry and our academic research. Interrogating the way we understand race, gender and sexuality can be challenging, but if we are to provide informed critiques of these current issues, then we must first be informed. This video of Prof. Brittney Cooper provides such a critique.
