Racial Gaslighting
The assumption that we do not need to contend with race but, instead, must become more "neutral" is seen by many as a false assumption that is not within the purview of African descended people. Instead, the very notion of "neutrality" must be interrogated. Being "neutral" is frequently code for prioritizing the power structures which affirm "Whiteness."

By interrogating the premise of neutrality, Black academics make space for different methodological approaches such as autoethnography. This allows us to interpret the real lived experiences of our own communities.
