Dear M2M Research Network,
Happy New Year! Please see the enclosed call for papers with the theme of "Prayer." There are bursaries available from Majority World participants. Please see the enclosed information regarding the conference date, booking fees, and the specifics for the call for papers. Booking is now open for the Society for the Study of Theology’s seventy-second annual conference, which takes place at the University of Warwick from the 8th to the 11th of April 2024. This year’s theme is Prayer. The conference will feature plenary papers from Alana Vincent, Carlton Turner, Lauren Winner, and Steven Holmes. There will also be a plenary panel discussion chaired and facilitated by Ash Cocksworth, on everyday practices around prayer.
Booking
To book, please visit our website. Your username is your registered e-mail address. Early booking closes on the 26th of February, and the final bookings deadline is Thursday 18th of March 2024.
We are aware, however, that many cannot, or will not wish, to be present in person. For that reason, we are also providing online access to much of the conference, at a much lower fee. Online attendees are asked to pay the conference fee of £100.00 (£130 for non-members, or the day rate for individual days) – a fee level that will enable us to meet the significant costs of the technical equipment and support needed for this online provision. Online participants will be able to watch live streams of all plenary sessions, as well online-only short paper sessions, as well as to contribute questions to the discussions.
Membership Fees
At the Society’s last AGM, the membership voted a modest raise in the annual membership fee. The membership fee for student and non-waged members is not £10. The fee for ordinary members is now £25, though members are invited to set their fee at £25 per £10,000 of salary.
Returning members, please note: your membership will not be renewed until the new membership fee has been paid through. Please update your standing order to keep your membership current.
If you are not currently a member but would like to be, please visit our website to learn how!
Bursaries & Mentoring
The Society has a generous fund available to offset the costs of attending the annual conference. Applications for bursaries remain open until 5pm on the 17th of January. Information about how to apply can be found here. This year we are able to offer specific bursaries for Global Majority Heritage delegates; please note on your application whether you would like to be considered for one of these.
We also offer a mentoring scheme for those new to the society. If you are not currently a Member of SST but would like to become one in order to book at the reduced Members’ rate, please find registration information here.
Call for Papers
Short paper and seminar stream paper calls remain open until 5pm on the 17th of January.
Short Papers
For the 2024 conference the SST invites short paper proposals on the theme of ‘prayer’. Prayer is a spiritual practice which takes many forms and serves many purposes in the lives of those who partake. In many times, contexts and cultures, prayer enables people to experience connection to God and also to a wider community of faith. Yet it is also a point of frustration for many – in part because theologies of prayer can often struggle to articulate how it should be understood and practised, and what its effects might be in the life of (the) believer(s) and/or in the wider world.
We actively welcome a wide range of disciplinary perspectives germane to this topic from theology and cognates such as sociology/ anthropology/ philosophy of religion. Accepted papers will be given a 20-minute slot for presentation, followed by 10 minutes for discussion/ Q&A.
To submit a short paper proposal of 150-300 words, and to view full details of the call for short papers, click here: Call for Papers on Prayer
Seminar Papers
We also invite proposals for seminar papers on a range of ongoing topics outside of the main conference theme. This year sees the introduction of a new seminar stream focusing on Ecotheology, which is detailed on our website along with the other. The full (alphabetised) list of seminar streams for 2024 is as follows:
Black Theology
Christology, Trinity, and the Doctrine of God
Church, Theology, and Ministry
Ecotheology
LGBTQIA+ Theology
Sacramentality, Liturgy, and Theology
Theological Anthropology
Theological Ethics
Theology and the Arts
Theology and Science
Each seminar stream issues a separate call for papers with its own scope and set of criteria for selection of papers to be presented. Accepted papers will be given a 20-minute slot for presentation, followed by 10 minutes for discussion/ Q&A.
