Welcome to the new academic year! This brief newsletter functions to introduce our return from our summer hiatus at the Misogynoir to Mishpat (M2M) Research network. We have many exciting initiatives, announcements and blogs that are forthcoming! First, our sincere thanks, once again, to everyone who provided an abstract or paper for the special issue of the African Journal of Gender and Religion. The co-editors are busy with their feedback which will be provided to authors on schedule. We look forward to sharing more about the special issue which is slated for publication in July 2024.
Thematic Focus
We are continuing the theme, “Power on the Margins: Open the Gates!” In addition, we will solicit blogs, events and observations for Britain's "Black History Month" which is in October. We will continue using a mixture of podcasts, videos and blogs to explore knowledge production and decentering “Whiteness” as a social construct. This process provides us with power on the margins. It also allows us to open the gates for other overlooked voices.
Please look forward to our contributions regarding religious scholarship, religious leadership and activism. For religious scholars, we will continue to provide blogs/vlogs, job and fellowship opportunities and academic support for grant and academic writing.
Religious Scholarship
We hope to expose you to contributions by womanist scholars and others via writings, podcasts and videos. We have shared links to the wonderful podcast by Prof. Mitizi smith, Beyond the Womanist Classroom. There is another marvelous podcast the discovered called The Cosmic We. The podcast is hosted by Dr. Barbara Holmes and Dr. Donny Bryant. It deals with science, mysticism, spirituality and the creative arts. We would love to hear your feedback on this powerful podcast!
Religious Leaders
For religious leaders, we will continue to provide blogs and resources to provide you with support in your leadership journey. There are many wonderful women who are serving as ministers, pastors and bishops - and we hope use a combination of profiles, essays and videos to encourage awareness of these women and possible opportunities to network.
Activism
Finally, our activism will continue to engage issues such as missing Black women, Black maternal morbidity, and other relevant issues. For example, one of our interests centers on missing Black women and girls in the US, and the precarity of Black women’s lives across the globe. To that end, we are posting podcast links to Black Girl Gone: a True Crime Story. This podcast provides narrative details of missing or murdered Black women and girls to humanize them. Those of us whose offerings are within Christian Ethics or Theology would identify the imago Dei as an impetus for challenging the apathetic response to this phenomenon.
More Exciting Content
Additional blogs, videos and podcasts include a focus on contributions Shirley Chisholm and her contributions as foundational to Christian Ethics and a global awareness of equality and equity conversations. As many academics begin wondering how to move from theory to praxis, these conversations may be particularly important. We are also considering the social constructs which impact the communities in which we live and the possible contributions we can make to change things. As such, we are considering issues such as colorism, Black proximity and definitions of masculinity.
