When we talk about religious nationalism in the US, why is it is tied to “Whiteness?” The amazing Lisa Sharon Harper has done it again! In what we at M2M have hailed as one of her most interesting interviews, she shares with listeners what is meant by "The Religion of Whiteness." Her interview with Michael Emerson is a "must" for those who are confused as to why the matrix of Christianity, Whiteness and POWER appear to be reaching a fevered pitch. (Scroll to the bottom for the link.)
Together, she and Emerson explore what is meant by the terms: "Christian" and "White." They also identify some of the philosophical traces of racism which have influenced this matrix of Whiteness, Christianity and Power. How does Whiteness function within Christianity and what are its adherents? Are there symbols or icons which alert one to the existence of this problem within White Christian churches? What is the center of "power" within this form of Christianity? Can people of color also become pracitioners of this corrupt theology? If so, what can they do to be freed from the effects of a religiously supported form of racism?
A prolific writer, Harper has written many books including Evangelical Does Not Equal Republican…or Democrat (The New Press, 2008); Left Right and Christ: Evangelical Faith in Politics (Elevate, 2011); and the critically acclaimed, The Very Good Gospel: How Everything Wrong can be Made Right (Waterbrook, a division of Penguin Random House, 2016). The Very Good Gospel, was recognized as the “2016 Book of the Year” by Englewood Review of Books.

Why are people so afraid of a Black woman getting closer to the White House that they would opt for an unhinged demagogue? A Religion of Whiteness worships a racialized social order above it's own self interests. It eventually becomes the noose around the necks, not only for the lynched, but also for the lynchers.
