Dear all,
Following discussions that took place across the membership in the run-up to and during SST’s recent AGM (which was held at the conference in April this year), the SST Committee are pleased to invite you to an online event reflecting on the role of theology in the war in Gaza and Israel. Details of the event are below:
Date: Wednesday 25th September
Time: 19:00-21:00 (BST)
Location: Zoom (the link to join the meeting will be circulated to registered attendees 24hrs before the event – please check your emails and contactscott.midson@manchester.ac.uk if you have any issues with joining on 25th Sept)
Registration: https://zoom.us/meeting/register/tJIud--vqDItEt2C5SxGgt5QFw9qiq3EIKjm
The event will ask important questions about what theology does, and should, say in relation to the war in Gaza and Israel. It will reflect critically on the role of the public theologian and what the obligations and complicity of (public) theology is in the current context and humanitarian crisis.
The event has been developed in accordance with SST’s stated aims and objectives in its constitution, namely “facilitating and shaping theological thought, conversation and community.” With a focus on conversation and reflection at the centre of the event, then, the event has been developed through conversations with SST members and affiliated groups, and seeks to platform key voices.
The event will begin with an introduction to public theology in the context of the war in Gaza and Israel, led by Marika Rose [winchester.ac.uk] (Winchester), before opening to a panel discussion featuring the following speakers:
Marah Sarji [ptsem.edu] (Princeton)
Malaka Shwaikh [st-andrews.ac.uk] (St Andrews)
Omar Haramy [thisweekinpalestine.com] (Sabeel [sabeel-kairos.org.uk])
Munyurangabo Benda [queens.ac.uk] (Queen's Foundation)
Attendees will be invited to contribute to the discussion, which will take place in breakout groups and as a larger group. Robert Beckford (President, SST) will chair the event, which is designed to support collaborative and critical reflections on what activism and responsibility might look like for theologians working in the contexts of this (and other) war(s).
In addition to this event, SST has set up a bursary fund to support Palestinian theologians to attend the annual conference. We invite contributions to this bursary fund – further details of this will be provided at the event. SST is also reviewing the policies of companies that it banks and engages with – an update on this will be provided online and at the event.
