Dear Research Network, Colleagues and Friends,
We are delighted to share a new episode of "Womanist Bible Talk." Episode 9 is entitled, Episode 9: Matthew 2: Escape to Egypt, Assata, and Fugitive Narratives. For many years, African Americans have been encouraged by the Israelites who escaped bondage. This concept of a liberating God, one who doesn't only encourage your during your struggle, but liberates you from it, has been a guiding force. It is through this God who cares enough, not to leave you in your circumstances but to elevate you above your oppression, that has been most important for those suffering. Listen to this episode which combines the Biblical narratives of liberation with African American history and figures who have dared to seize their freedom at high cost! Let us know your thoughts.

Show Notes
In this episode, I interview Dr. Shively T. J. Smith to discuss her article in Womanist Interpretations of the Bible: Expanding the Discourse, “One More Time with Assata on My Mind: A Womanist Rereading of the Escape to Egypt (Matt 2:13-23) in Dialogue with an African American Woman Fugitive Narrative.” We discuss the ahistorical depictions of Egypt in art and literature, the Jewish diaspora in Egypt that shield Joseph, Mary, and Jesus in juxtaposition with the story of fugitive Assata Shakur.
